Client Overview

Blue Tiger partnered with a major UK university to support student recruitment activity ahead of the January UCAS deadline.

This campaign marked the first time Blue Tiger managed the January Deadline period end-to-end, from the start of the key recruitment window in October through to the UCAS submission deadline in January.

The objective was to increase applications across key subject areas while improving efficiency in an increasingly competitive and budget-constrained higher education market.

The Challenge

The January UCAS deadline has become an increasingly competitive recruitment period, with universities shifting focus earlier in the cycle to reduce reliance on Clearing.

Operating with a 30% reduced media budget, the client needed to:

  • Increase total applications year on year
  • Improve cost per application (CPA)
  • Drive higher levels of high-intent traffic
  • Deliver stronger efficiency from reduced investment

The campaign required a more strategic, intent-led approach to meet application targets while materially improving ROI.

The Insight

Previous recruitment activity had prioritised volume and reach, without always accounting for differences in audience intent across the recruitment journey.

The opportunity lay in shifting from a volume-led approach to an intent-led strategy, engaging higher-intent audiences earlier in the cycle and optimising media investment against application outcomes rather than traffic alone.

By clarifying the role of each channel and aligning activity to specific courses and subject areas, our client could drive stronger application growth while improving efficiency.

The Approach

Blue Tiger developed a segmented and synchronised full-funnel media strategy, combining digital and offline channels to reach priority audiences with tailored messaging while minimising wastage.

Granular, segmented campaigns were built across key courses and subject areas, enabling budget to be allocated dynamically based on performance and individual course targets.

All channels were planned to work together, building reach and frequency across multiple touchpoints. Ongoing creative testing and optimisation ensured investment remained focused on the most effective messages, audiences, and formats throughout the campaign.

The Solution in Action

Campaign activity ran continuously from October through to the January UCAS deadline, ensuring our client maintained visibility throughout the key decision-making period.

Creative and messaging were tailored by audience segment and subject area, enabling more relevant communication with school leavers, mature students, and parents or key influencers.

Performance was monitored closely, with budgets and tactics optimised in response to application data rather than top-line traffic alone. This allowed our client to outperform key competitors during the deadline period, despite operating with a reduced budget.
